Few interior designers can say they've ushered in a new era of style; few are David Hicks. The late great English decorator was one of the 20th century's most influential tastemakers, whose career was launched after his mother's London house was published in the pages of this very magazine.
The featured house railed against the ‘prettiness’ of the time– much of which can be summarised in a single John Fowler interior. Where Fowler opted for chintz, Hicks chose bold geometric patterns, punchy colour and, what he deemed, 'masculine' forms. Soon, Hicks was the most sought after designer in London.
His legacy lives on in his children, Ashley, a talented designer, writer and artist, and his daughter Angelica, an illustrator, who have edited a new book David Hicks in Colour, published by the magazine and lifestyle brand Cabana. The book celebrates his life and work and is available to purchase in three different covers from cabanamagazine.co.uk.
To celebrate the book's publication, Cabana have launched a tableware collection that draws on some of Hicks's most famous interiors and prints. The range includes Murano glass tumblers, patterned tablecloths and napkins and hand painted carafes.
