The designer, architect and creative director of Lore Group, Jacu Strauss is the visionary behind renowned design-led hotels such as One Hundred Shoreditch, Sea Containers London on the banks of the Thames, Pulitzer Amsterdam, and the Riggs and Lyle hotels in Washington, DC. According to Jacu, his objective is always to achieve design that is right for its location rather than being on-trend so that the hotels he creates embody the characteristics and aesthetics of the community they serve. To achieve this, Jacu often relocates temporarily to fully understand the culture and core workings of a city.
To mark the start of London Design Festival 2023, One Hundred Shoreditch is opening its doors to The Calico Club members, hosting a private dinner and intimate panel discussion on the 19th September 2023. Jacu will be joined by Lucy Ward, brand director at Vinterior, and the designers Jan Hendzel and Philippe Malouin. Moderated by Davey Hunter-Jones, curator of The Calico Club by House & Garden, the evening will feature lively discussion on topics such as creating timeless interiors and mixing old and new, with the experts sharing insider tips that can be translated easily into your own home interiors.
The panel guests are respected as leading experts in their field of work. With such a diverse range of experience between Jacu, Lucy, Philippe, Jan and Davey, the evening is set to be rich with insightful discussions on all aspects of design.
The evening is kindly being sponsored by Hambledon Vineyard. Established in 1952, Hambledon Vineyard is a British, family-run winery and the oldest commercial vineyard in the UK. They grow their grapes in the Hampshire village of Hambledon, where finest chalk soil and cool climate make the most exceptional terroir for creating world-class sparkling wines.

Jan Hendzel
Jan’s career began at the age 15, when he became a pattern-maker’s apprentice, creating complex moulds to metal-cast bespoke tools for the automotive and aircraft industries. This required incredible accuracy by hand and gave him a firm foundation in understanding the properties of materials.
In 2006, he started a course in product design at Central Saint Martins and, while studying, he worked with a cabinet maker. He went on to co-found Hendzel & Hunt, a furniture workshop in south London, and started creating original commissioned pieces for high-profile residential and commercial projects. Six years later – needing a bigger workshop and more time to explore ideas and design his own products – he founded Jan Hendzel Studio.
Jan now has a team of designer-makers and a fully equipped workshop with CNC capability. He has designed several product collections and has exhibited at DesignJunction, Masterpiece London, Sims Reed Gallery and Saatchi Gallery. He has worked on many large commercial projects, including Victory House hotel in 2017, Japan House in 2018 and Wilder restaurant in 2019.
